CCD 7th: P.R.A.Y.S. + angels + Yom Kippur (day 2)

September 27, 2009 Leave a comment

Today, in our 7th grade pre-Confirmation class, we handed out journals & wrote on inside cover …

In my BAPTISM, I …

  • PRAISE = God for who He is … God
  • REPENT = confess + rec forgiveness + change
  • ASK = for me + other (“5 finger prayer”)
  • YIELD = be open to God’s voice
  • SHARE = my faith with others

In my CLASS, I …

  • PRAISE = encourage others
  • REPENT = take responsibility for wrongs
  • ASK = learn by asking questions
  • YIELD = respect speaker + listen
  • SHARE = contribute + respect privacy

Difference between angels + humans?

  • Angels = pure spiritual beings
  • Humans = body + spiritual beings

Yom Kippur = Jewish “day of atonement”

  • fast, no work, pray, make reparations for sins
  • “scapegoat” takes sins of the people = Jesus

HOMEWORK:
(1) Decorate Binder Cover with “ME” … on a sheet of paper, make a collage of you, your hobbies, likes, etc.

(2) do the “Doxology” prayer exercise from last week if you haven’t done it yet.

CCD hs: parents orientation (day 1)

September 22, 2009 Leave a comment

A local parish, St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, needed catechists for their Religious Education program on Tuesday & Wednesday nights.  Since I go to St Mark’s for Mass occasionally & Wednesday Bible study, I guess I consider it a “2nd home parish,” so I volunteered to help.  I was paired up with Jose A., another former seminarian (3 years in Colombia), who’s very excited about our High School Confirmation class of 24 kids, so far.  Most showed up today with their parents for a large group orientation with the DRE and pastor in the church.  We got to introduce ourselves for about 20 minutes at the end.

— Even though it wasn’t really “planned,” I can already see the blessings that will come from my passion for catechesis being used on Sunday’s at my home parish with 7th graders and here on Tuesday nights with high school teens.

CCD 7th: Intro + prayer “sweet spot”

YES "4 Winds Blow"Today is day 1 of Religious Education (CCD) at my parish.  I’m a catechist for 7th grade Pre-Confirmation class with my aide Donny.  We had 13 of our 17 kids today, with apparently more signing up late as we speak.  A very diverse group from “quiet” to “super-animated.”

We played a classic “get-to-know-you” icebreaker game called “Four Winds Blow.” It’s like musical chairs sitting in a circle.  The person in the middle says 3 things about themselves.  Then they say “Four winds blow to anyone …” (wearing jeans, wearing gym shoes, with blue eyes, wearing glasses, with ears, etc.)  Then everyone that fits the profile needs to get up and get another seat (at least 2 seats over) while the person in the middle tries to get a seat as well.  If you get stuck in the middle 3 time, you need to sing a song of your choice.  The “Alphabet Song” and a Spongebob song were sang.  Lots of fun for all.

I also gave a brief into to the curriculum and talked about finding our “prayer sweet spot” this year.  Using a tennis racket and baseball bat, the kids taught me about finding the “sweet spot” to get the best result out of their uses … although similar for many, everyone has their own sweet spot in the way they play sports.  Well, our prayer life is very similar.  We need to each find what works best for our own individual prayer experience in order to grow.  Some like Scripture, some the Rosary, some praise & worship, some music, some poetry, some adoration, some quiet meditation, etc.  This year, we’ll have different prayer experience in order to help find our own prayer “sweet spot.”

We wrote down the simple Doxology prayer on index cards and will use it this week as a homework prayer experience.  Everyone needs to try praying it at different time, days and ways this week.  Next Sunday, we’ll share what worked and what didn’t.

As we discussed the Doxology prayer, we asked the questions like “What is a creature?  Can a rock praise God?  What’s the difference between angels & humans?  What’s a Holy Ghost?”  — a very vocal and curious group … we’re blessed to be journeying in our faith together!

I prayed the Doxology during this post. 🙂

Doxology prayer by Nicole Nordeman

In our religious education class today, we used this short Doxology prayer for reflection.  Short, simple, glorifying God, and powerful!

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.

CCD + BAPTiSM + 5 finger prayer

October 6, 2008 2 comments

Tonight’s CCD class (religious education) was on “Prayer.”  We used a PowerPoint slide show I made a couple years ago to profile the different types of prayer.  I used an acronym I made up using BAPTiSM:

B A P T i S M =

B = Blessing (to invoke God’s power for a person, place or activity)
A = Adoration (the “created” before the Creator)
P = Praise (glorify God)
T = Thanksgiving (gratitude)
i = Intercession (I ask God for OTHERS) + Petition (I ask God for ME)
S = “Sorry” (ask for forgiveness)
M = Meditation (tuning into God)

When discussing Intercession, I suggested using the “5 Finger Prayer” that I personally like using:

5 FINGER PRAYER =

Thumb – Pray for those nearest you such as your family, parents, siblings, spouse, children, friends and co-workers.

Pointing Finger – Pray for those who instruct, heal and minister such as teachers, health care professionals, pastors and church workers.

Middle/Highest Finger – Pray for leaders in business, police and fire departments, military personnel, and local, state and federal government including the judiciary.

Fourth/Weakest Finger – Pray for those sick and in need, locally, nationally and internationally including the persecuted church and those who have suffered natural and man-made disasters.

Fifth/Smallest Finger – Pray for your needs.

CCD + free will + Bruce Almighty + prayer

Today in 10th grade CCD we did “free will” and prayer using clips from Bruce Almighty.  We had a great debate of “free will” verses God’s “all-knowing” nature.  Also discussed angels, being that today is the feast of the Archangels.  It was a great day!

Here are most of the clips on “Free Will” from Bruce Almighty:

CCD: faith + songs with a message

September 22, 2008 Leave a comment

Today was class #2 of Religious Education @ St Timothy Catholic Church (Miami).  I assist the cathechist in 10th grade Confirmation.  We welcomed 3 more kids to bring our class to 10 so far.  A great group of kids!

After reflecting on yesterday’s Gospel reading (Workers in the Vineyard), we reviewed their assignment.  They were to find a song they liked that had a religious message.  Everyone had good examples as they read some lyrics out loud.  [Below are some videos of a couple songs used.]

Afterwards, we reviewed chapter 1 in their textbook.  We discussed faith (Hebrews 11:1), Divine Revelation, Bible (Hebrews 4:12-13), Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures), New Testament and more.  I’m not sure how it got started, but we tried to prove someone’s girlfriend existed in the next room and I remember mentioning Metaphysics class somehow.  It was a lively discussion.

“Rise Today” by Alter Bridge
Our time is running out / Hope we find a better way
Before we find we’re left with nothing
For every life that’s taken / So much love is wasted

This world / Only love can set it right
This world / If only peace would never die
Seems to me that we’ve got each other wrong
Was the enemy just your brother all along?
Yeah, oh yeah / I want to rise today / And change this world
Yeah, oh yeah / Oh won’t you rise today / And change this world?

“Meant to Live” by Switchfoot
… We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah
We were meant to live for so much more / Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

“Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot
… The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be
I dare you to move (2X)  / I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move (2X)  / Like today never happened (2X)
Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go? (2X)  / Salvation is here

Confirmation Retreat revisited

February 10, 2008 Leave a comment

Confirmation Retreat skitConfirmation Retreat skitBack at my home parish, the 8th grade Confirmation kids (some were my CCD kids from last year) had an evening of reflection as a follow-up to their 2-day Confirmation Retreat last month [my previous blog post about it].  The schedule was pretty simple.  After 6pm Mass (which I served at), pizza on the deck, a great skit (see pictures) about Jesus bridging the gap in the face of temptations, a personal witness talk by a teen, small group debrief (“What’s happened since the Retreat?”), and some large group reflections (that I couldn’t stay for) to close.  The kids definitely wanted to be there.  A great sign of their Confirmation journey.

CCD + catechesis crisis

January 28, 2008 2 comments

Ministry Class @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLMINISTERIAL PRACTICUM – (Fr Michael) — since the weather was so nice, we had class outside in the grass and discussed the current state of catechesis in the Catholic Church.  Whether you call it CCD or Religious Education or Christian Formation, it’s essentially teaching the Catholic faith to adults or children (either in private Catholic Schools or weekly evening for public schoolers).  We started by sharing, comparing & contrasting our own experiences in CCD verses private Catholic Schools.  We highlighted the good and bad areas that need work, including better textbooks, better catechist training, more challenging truth (and less warm & fuzzy emotion-only faith), and other issues.

I can identify with many of these issues, especially since I’ve been a Pre-Confirmation catechist for (mostly) 7th graders for about the last 15 years.  Even when a catechist commits lots of time, effort & prayer to present catechist attractively, relevantly and challengingly, frustration stiffle your efforts that perpetuates generation to generation producing ignorant Catholics with a childish knowledge of their Catholic faith.  Improvements are coming … through the Church … through a committed laity … through our perseverence … to share the Gospel message of Christ in words and lessons and, most importantly, a living witness in “me”, in order to fullfill my role and awaken all I encounter.

Despite the obstacles and frustrations, I recall a quote from Pope John Paul II about teaching the faith to young people that illustrated my approach to catechesis and youth ministry through the years.  [I’m still looking for the exact quote and will post here … check back]

Confirmation Retreat

January 12, 2008 7 comments

Today is day #2 of my parish Confirmation Retreat (it started last night) for the 8th grades of St Bernadette (both School & CCD).  Since most of the CCD kids were my students last year, I assisted with a few minor things.  The theme of the Holy Spirit was implimented with the popular LifeTeen format called “Fire & Ice” that is supposed to be a 3-day retreat, but it was a adapted to 2 long evening sessions.  Simply … it was awesome!  The parish hall was used for most activities with awesome decorations themed FIRE & ICE.  Most of the talks were done by former high school confirmandi of the parish.  The small group discussion were facilitated by peer ministers from local Archbishop McCarthy High School and the activites were a lot of fun (especially the “Human Pinata“).

The end of the retreat got pretty emotional, especially with Adoration/Benediction, a video from YouTube.com (below) featuring a skit at a Christian youth conference done to the Lifehouse song “Everything” (definitely moving), an altercall & open mic sharing, but everything affirmed the Holy Spirit moving in our lives preparing to affirm their commitment to the sacrament of Confirmation.

CCD End of Year Party

Today was our CCD catechists’ “End of Year Party” at Buca Di Beppo Italian Restaurant.  There were more than 30 people including catechists, families, Msgr Strano & Deacon Lou.  Since I’ve been a 7th grade Confirmation catechist for almost 15 years, CCD celebrations have always been great, and this was no exception.

It was my first opportunity to officially mention my acceptance to the seminary.  Although I have been seriously discerning the priesthood over the past year, I only shared with a few close family, friends & pastor.  So, I’m sure it came as a surprise to most.  Why did I wait so long to share?  Because I wanted to delay the “freak show” as much as possible.  People start looking at you differently and reactions vary from “instant canonization” to “I knew there was something weird about him.”

The reactions from the handful of people I told was very supportive.  In some cases, as I expected, the news was mixed with disappointment, realizing I wouldn’t be as active in CCD or youth group (which was just starting to gain momentum with possibly starting LifeTeen).  It was bitter sweet.  But, by far, the support and encouragement was heartfelt and humbling.  Without my parish family I wouldn’t have heard “the call” and without them I don’t think I’ll be able to respond fully to it.  I will continue to pray for them, knowing many have, and will continue to, prayed for me.
