090924_SJVCS-Mosaic-of-Mary-16-AWESOMEFor the last couple of years, Msgr Michael Carruthers (rector of SJVCS) and Peter Dionne (artist & seminarian, SJVCS class of 2008) have been working on a new mosaic to our Blessed Mother for the chapel gardens.  With today’s dedication of the new mosaic to Mary, the New Eve and Star of the Sea, here are some pictures posted by Fr Michael from mosaic conception through completion.

Wow!  Beautiful!  Surely our Lady is happy.

Also see dedication ceremony here.

Walk for Life @ SJVC seminary

February 7, 2009 1 comment

Today is the annual “Walk for Life” done throughout the US with multiple locations around the Archdiocese of Miami.  Our seminary was one of the locations.  The day began with Mass with Miami Auxiliary Bishop Noonan with a full Chapel.

WORKLIST — today’s a cold day to drive the golf cart around, but someone has to do it.

WORKLIST (manual labor) — Cool weather was nice.  Busy day today with lots of palm branches to pick up.  Also found some proud weed-pullers.  I also caught my golf-cart partner Manuel swinging from a palm branch like a makak (Creole for “monkey”).  — Holy labor!

DARKNESS FALL on us during Evening Prayer right before dinner.  The winds picked up and there was an erie feeling in the air.

One of our Brother’s Mother made snack care packages for all 60 of us seminarians.  Thank you!

Volleyball was tonight.  Foot injury during basketball.

WORKLIST — On Wednesday afternoons we all have a Work List Job that involves some kind of manual labor around the seminary campus.  The job changes each semester.

This semester, I’m the Work List Coordinator Assistant (that’s why I can’t drive the golf cart).  My job changes depending on the needs of all the areas of work but looking cool in a golf cart is the most important job description.  : )

BISHOP’s DAY OFF — With all our work we’ve done over the last couple weeks, and most especially yesterday’s celebration for Bishop Noonan’s 25th Priestly Anniversary, we were given a DAY OFF under special dispensation by the Bishop himself … which is this Friday! We LOVE our Bishop Noonan!  (not just for the day off, but that’s nice too!)

legendary “Tree of Vocational End” @ SJVCS

September 24, 2008 Leave a comment

Here at St John Vianney College Seminary (Miami, FL), there is a beautiful and gigantic tree outside the Library building with a legend attached.  Apparently any seminarian that has tried to climb the tree has left the seminary [and not become a priest].  I’m not one for superstitions, but knowing that now may make the tree a temptation during a time of spiritual “desolation” or just on one of those “stressful” seminary days that forces the question, “Why am I here again?”  I hope I don’t do something that extreme [and immature] to actually consider an avenue of “vocational suicide” in a moment of weakness.  Fortunately for me, I have a long walk to that “tree” from the Pre-Theology houses … and I know my fellow brothers are there to keep me from “myself” in those moments.  — Thank God today is a “good” day  : )   lol

compline + Our Lady of Guadalupe

Pre-T Compline with Our Lady of Guadalupe @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLIn this Jubilee Year of the Archdiocese of Miami, there are 2 paintings of Our Lady of Guadalupe traveling throughout the diocese spend a week in each.  This week, St John Vianney College Seminary has one.

Pre-T Compline with Our Lady of Guadalupe @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLAs a group, the Pre-Theology seminarians had our regular Thursday night Compline (Night Prayer) before Our Lady.  We also did a rosary with the Luminous Mysteries (as the lights of the Chapel got brighter).  — brotherhood in prayer before Our Lady … 🙂

Pre-T chapels blessing

Pre-Theology Night Prayer @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLPre-Theology Night Prayer @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLOur off-campus Pre-Theology homes were finally ready to have their individual chapels blessed.  Each of the 2 homes have room designated as an adoration chapel with the Blessed Sacrament exposed (not yet … that’s Saturday morning Mass in our back yards).  We have a red candle holder, holy water font, alter and tabernacle in each, so far.

Us 12 Pre-Theologian seminarians had Night Prayer together and then blessed each chapel seperately (with some book delays).  — Beautiful.

Jubilee monstrance pilgrimage @ SJV

Tonight ends a 2 week pilgrimage in the Archdiocese of Miami of a monstrance blessed by Pope John Paul II to encourage vocations, especially in this Golden Jubilee year.  Today at 8pm, here at St John Vianney College Seminary, we had a full chapel of visitor for Compline (Night Prayer) with benediction & adoration with the visiting vocation monstrance.  Auxiliary Bishop Noonan had a good reflection and I was lector (a bit pro-active) for a great experience.

Gabriel Loire mural @ St Raphael Chapel @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FL

Gabriel Loire mural @ St Raphael Chapel @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLAs I start feeling the end of the year coming (2 more weeks), I realized how attached I’ve become to the beautiful mural in our main St Raphael Chapel here at St John Vianney College Seminary.  The mural is done by Gabriel Loire.

I asked a brother seminarian to take a picture and had it blown up to fit in a 16″ x 20″ silver frame so I have it during our summer break.  We had to add a top & bottom border to fit the frame size.  A link to the bigger picture is below if you’d like to make one too.

Elvis on Univision

Elvis, Miami seminarian on UnivisionElvis, Miami seminarian on UnivisionTonight at 10pm, we watched Elvis, one of our brother seminarians from the Archdiocese of Miami, in an interview on a special featuring the Catholic Church and vocations on a Spanish show on Univision.  It also featured our Miami Vocation Director, Fr Manny Alavarez along with some video of our campus and small groups of our brother seminarians.  — Elvis is famous!  I tried to find a video clip to put here, but couldn’t find it.

Senior rockers gift

2008 rocking chair gift from Seniors @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLAfter our Rector’s Conference (a summary of all conferences throughout the year), the graduating Senior & Pre-Theology 2 classes presented the rest of the “house” with a gift.  They gave us 4 wooden rocking chairs to surround our “Philosophy” hangout table outside the library.  Each has a small plaque with last year’s theme, “Men of Communion” in 4 different languages … English … Spanish … Creole … Latin.  — a great idea for something we’ll all use regularly … Thank you!

Today we took our 2008 graduation class picture for St John Vianney College Seminary here in Miami, FL.  I’m right in the middle.  — this isn’t the “official picture” … thanx Javi for this one!

SJV ChapelAt MASS, the choir sang some awesome Latin hymns, but couldn’t pull off the English ones.  🙂

Afternoon VOLLEYBALL outside with our new (fragile) net in the grass field was great.  3 fun games.

Dinner announcements were done by Fr Rios (very lively and apparently historical/rare).

Adoration Chapel @ St Brendan Catholic Church, Miami, FLAdoration Chapel @ St Brendan Catholic Church, Miami, FLAfter a long evening walk with some seminarian brothers, we stopped at St Brendan’s Catholic Church adoration chapel since it’s next door to the seminary grounds.  Actually, last September 2007, this adoration chapel was the site of an alleged sillouette of the Holy Family on a white tapistry.  The sillouette was cast by a shadow from a candle.  The alleged event lasted a few day and even made it in the local Miami Herald.  — this is my first time in the beautiful chapel myself.

Adoration Chapel @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLI also took a picture a few days ago of one of our seminary adoration chapels on campus here at St John Vianney College Seminary.  It’s located upstairs at the end of the hall of the seminary dormitory.  — a great place to spend time with the Lord

Walk for Life + shooting

Walk for Life @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLWALK FOR LIFE — this morning, we had a full Chapel for Mass with Auxiliary Bishop Noonan since today was the “Walk for Life” here at St John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, FL.  The walking route was basically from the Main Chapel to the front gate around the Reflection Pond (the view from the gate can be seen in my blog header picture at the top looking toward the Main Chapel).  Lots of participant, especially kids from local schools.  — Great day to support life

DOTS — PsYcHoTiC — “sit” — Second Life — home

Shooting range targetCLOSE CALL — on my cellphone, I received a picture of a shooting range target with the text, “Check me out. First time at shooting range!”  It wasn’t signed (like most friends do), so I started wondering who would wish me harm, especially since they did pretty good for their first time.  After finally tracking the phone source, I was relieved to find it was my sister [or maybe I should be more concerned :)] — close call, my own “Pro-Life” experience!

Major Minor Day + sick

January 17, 2008 Leave a comment

I was still pretty sick today (missed Mass & morning class), but by the afternoon, I felt better and wanted to get involved in the special event today.  Today, we host Major Minor Day, where the seminarians from St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary (major) join us here at St John Vianney College Seminary (minor) for fellowship, soccer, food and prayer.

We started with a tour of the new Pre-Theology houses (off campus) to rub in what they didn’t have (and still don’t) when they were here.  Then we played an awesome game of Minor vs Major soccer where we destroyed them with a final score of 6-1Solomn evening prayer @ 5pm followed by wine & cheese and ending in a great dinner feast with fellowship.  — A tradition I hope they continue
