Mark + Good News + St Francis

street cat @ St John Vianney College Seminary, Miami, FLMASS – (Fr Joseph) — today is the feast of St Mark the Evangelist.  In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the apostles, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned…”

When we preach, we need to find the Good News for other, not just talk at people with facts and research, but truely connect to make Christ alive through our actions and witness.  As St Francis said, “Preach the Gospel to others … if necessary use words.”

I wonder what the modern world would think of St. Francis today? They thought he was mad back then, let alone in our so called enlightened society. I can’t help but chuckle at that thought when you consider scripture that points out that we are no different from our ancestors. Well I take that back, we can tend to be a little bit dumber or should I say that we have a lack of common sense..lol

I think Francis said one time that he hoped the world would catch a little bit of his madness. I can imagine Francis being deadly serious at times and abundantly joyful at other times.

We could certainly follow his example to preach the Gospel always and if necessary use words. It’s in our actions, words, touch and love that we reach out to the world. As Jesus said, the world will know that you are truly my disciples when you love one another as I have loved you. It’s hard to love in the world especially when someone doesn’t want your love or abuses it. Even more so when they become hostile to you. But that’s the love Christ is calling us to because he himself set the example of pure love. We are to love as God loves with the help of his grace and mercy. Not that we would come close to loving our brothers and sisters as God does, but we must start eternity now. For salvation has already begun in the faithful believer and it only comes to completion when we behold the beatific vision of God the Father, God The Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
