Deck the Halls movieAmadeusSPANISH 2 – (Dr Jimenez) — Final Exam.  — I guess it went ok?

EVENING MOVIE — tonight, we watched Deck the Hall drive-in style with a projector outside for the whole community.

WRITE A PAPER — today I re-watched Amadeus for my Arts & Ideas reflection paper due tomorrow.  Here is my opening paragraph:

The Modern period, beginning with the Renaissance, is most known for its ideas in rationalism, empiricism, enlightenment and romanticism.  A reflection of the time can be seen in the he 1984 film Amadeus, based on Peter Shaffer’s stage play.  The story takes place during the end of the 18th century and is based on the lives of two composers of the time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri.  Within the film, signs of the “modern period” can be seen.  More specifically, the modern traits of displaced eschatology, the rise of the genius and technology are demonstrated in Amadeus.

PRE-T SOCIAL DAY — today, us Pre-Theology seminarians got together in the afternoon for some social bonding with some bowling at Bird Bowl.  The pins were stubborn, but we had a great time.  — I was “Agent Black”

Pre-T croquetSOCIAL PART 2 — afterwards, we played some Boggle [11 points for CLOISTER and body parts count] and then some Croquet in the backyard [freshly soded foot-tall grass] — I was out first.

STUDY GROUP — several evening study groups to prepare for tomorrow’s Arts & Ideas test on the medieval art period.

After our retreat ended with morning Mass, the “Miami guys” had an outing to the Dolphin Mall.  We ate dinner, went bowling and hung out.  — great time (I actually bowled a 149)

Parent Day

Today we had lots and LOTS of vistors!  It was “Parent Day” where immediate family is invited to spend the evening together for a tour, Mass, dinner and entertainment.  With 65 seminarians, we had a record number of people (about 300) from all over the world.  Everything went great!  Everyone worked together to prepare, plan, execute and clean-up (I even served wine).  We had some great entertainment, ranging from solos, poetry, skits (“Making Beans” & “Pick-Pocket”) and some music (including “Amore“).  –We’ve got a talented & blessed house!

Bill Baggs – 13th floor – mexican

Bill Baggs ParkDAY TRIP — Today was the first opitional weekend trip planned by Fr Michael.  A group of us went to Bill Baggs State Park at the tip of Key Biscayne.  An afternoon of fun in the sun.

MOVIE — watched the “The Thirteenth Floor” a couple times to get the connection to Decartes (assignment for Modern Philosophy).  Fr Santos likes it better than the Matrix (I wouldn’t go that far).  — “I think therefore I am” … (I think?)

DINNER — Today’s dinner theme was “Mexican.”  — great food

Gesu – Bayside – The Invasion

Gesu Church in downtown MiamiGesu Church in downtown Miami In order to give the returning men room to get settled, the new men took a social trip to downtown Miami via Metro-Rail.

GESU CHURCH — our first stop was 12:05pm Mass at Gesu Church in downtown Miami, the oldest church in the Miami area, established by the Jesuits.  It’s a beautiful church and the Mass was celebrated by Fr Michael & Fr Alvarez & (the pastor) Fr Alvarez.

BaysideDowntown MiamiBAYSIDE — afterwards, we walked to Bayside, had lunch and shopped for most of the afternoon.  We met at the “big tree,” saw the “One Man Band,” and walked by the “Torch of Friendship” that JFK had made with all the Latin American countries (except Cuba was missing?).  — it was hot

EVENING — since the returning men were starting their Day of Recollection retreat tonight, we were kindly asked to “leave the seminary” and not to come back before 11pm — nobody argued with that.  Most of us went to the Dolphin Mall to see a movie.  Since most of the movies we were interested in were sold out or at late times, I recommended (probably for the last time) “The Invasion,” an aweful movie choice.  I don’t expect anyone to take my suggestions after that one.  We still had a good time afterwards.

FIU ropes course

Today, we all spent the day at the FIU Ropes Course to build teamwork.  I would have tried some of the harder ropes activities, but I’m still sore from yesterday’s volleyball.  — It was a great way to affirm our brotherhood.
