IPF logo tattoo ?
At the end of my 8-day silent retreat last month, I was so inspired by all the “prayer tools” and personal experiences in prayer that I didn’t want to forget it all. I would joke with friends that I wanted a tattoo of the IPF logo on my chest or arm to remind me of all the graces and blessing I’ve received here that I don’t want to forget to use everyday. I see it as a sacramental. 🙂
Now, after the courses in “Christian Prayer & Virtue“, “Christian Spirituality & Sexuality“, “The Spirituality of Diocesan Priesthood”, and now “The Mystery of the Liturgy”, I want that tattoo now more than ever!
The IPF logo is a beautiful symbol of the Incarnation (God becoming man) showing the Trinity with our Blessed Mother Mary. The Holy Spirit (dove) is impregnating the Blessed Mother (letter M) with Jesus Christ (cross), all for the glory of God the Father (rays from the cross). Awesome!
I’ve never really thought about getting a tattoo so I’m just thinking out loud.
— Is it even Christian to get a tattoo?
— Would it be considered a sacramental?
— Where should I put it? On my chest or upper arm?
— In black & white or in color?
— As a seminarian, should I ask permission from my Bishop?
— Should I ask other brother seminarians if they’d get one too? Is this growing in fraternity or being a bad influence?
— Would my mother approve?
— I could use some help here. Don’t be shy. (Most people aren’t) 🙂
– I think this is a personal decision that can only come after much prayer and fasting. Questions to ask yourself: Will this help the Lord’s ministry, or hinder it? Remember, The Lord related to those, no one else related too with his ministry. Many times he did the most unorthodox things of the day. However his motivation for doing anything was always pure. What is your motivation? What would Kermit do?
Is it Christian to get a tattoo?
I love history and if you have time read the Biblical scholar’s M.W. Thomson theory about why Moses may have favored tattoos. It is possible that he saw tattoos as a way to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews from slavery in Egypt Exodus 13:9. However, in Leviticus 19:28 it is clear that a tattoo is a no no. Yet I can site three other examples that can make your head spin. Read Isaiah 44:5, Isaiah 49:16, Job 37:7
If God is calling you too physically, engraved yourself with a mark that shows everyone the work that God is doing within you…then do it.
If the act is for pride…then do not mark your flesh.
If you are getting a tattoo to remember a friend/spouse/relative who passed, I think it is ok to get said tattoo as long as it is simple and in good taste.
With regards to a religious tattoo, as long as you are doing it because of love of God and not just for show then go ahead!
Interesting, i am too thinking of a tattoo the chirho, but i do not know if its Christian, I will like to know what your bishop thinks, by the way the IPF Logo is beautiful
